Everyone loves a good stroll and seeing a city on foot always makes you feel like you are really experiencing what it has to offer. So stretch your legs, clear your head and discover these 7 wonderful walkable cities. Get those walking shoes on!
1. Venice, Italy
With its narrow streets and history at every turn, walking is the best way to discover the 118 small islands linked by bridges, that make Venice what it is. Explore the tiny streets and don't be afraid to lose yourself here. There will always be someone to help you find your way! Stroll along the Grand Canal, head over the Rialto bridge, the oldest in the city, and then go up the Clock Tower for a fantastic birds-eye view. When you tire of walking, take a ride on a gondola instead. Heaven!
2. Amsterdam, Netherlands
It is famous for its canals (165 in total) and bicycles but walking around Amsterdam is highly recommended too, with walking tours taking you around a city knee deeply in culture and history. Check out the Rijksmuseum, with some world famous art by Rembrandt and Vermeer on show here, and take in the cafe culture, pretty canalsides and the many museums around his historical city.
3. Quebec, Canada
Quebec’s pretty cobblestone lanes give the city a very European feel, there are also many walking paths and beautiful views of the St Lawrence River, which make it the perfect place to explore on foot. As the founding city of 'new France', back in the 17th Century, it is steeped in history. Don't miss the fortifications, the grand Chateau Frontenac - the famous and much photographed hotel, which would make a perfect place to stop for tea, the parliament building and the pretty Vieux Port (Old Port). So much to see, so little time!
4. Edinburgh, Scotland
This ancient and pretty capital of Scotland is the perfect place to walk around. Edinburgh is a small city but there is a huge amount to see. Make sure you head to the Royal Mile, take in the views up at Arthurs Seat and soak up the atmosphere in one of the local bars and cafes along the way. Don't forget Edinburgh Castle - this famous landmark is a must see and you could easily spend a morning walking around it and taking in the views.
5. Florence, Italy
The birthplace of the Renaissance, walking around this enchanting city is like stepping back in time. There are wonderful museums to explore, the famous Uffizi gallery is an art lover's dream find for renaissance masterpieces and the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Il Duomo) is the remarkable cathedral right in the heart of the city. If you have the energy head up the 463 steps to admire the views at the top. The ancient Ponte Vecchio bridge is also a highlight and as Florence is a fashion capital, when you've taken in the sites there is plenty of choice to shop until you drop here too!
6. Dubrovnik, Croatia
This UNESCO World heritage listed city by the sea is truly a sensational place to walk around and get lost in. Dotted with renaissance buildings, you can't come to Dubrovnik without taking a walk along the old city walls, trying a spot of Croatian wine and enjoying the seafood in the charming old harbour. If you have time head to the beach and when your legs are tired take in the glorious views of the old town and sparkling sea from the cable car up to Mount Srdj.
7. Vienna, Austria
This top walking city is beautiful, surrounded in history and culture at every step. It is easy to find your way around here, the city is in a grid structure so you can search out the gems Vienna has to offer. Walk through the wonderful Belvedere Palace and Gardens and don't miss the famous Opera House, St Stephen's Cathedral and the many artisan delights on offer at Vienna's famous market! If you have time you can also visit the oldest zoo in the world at Zoo Vienna.
