1. The Vatican Museum, Vatican City, Italy
Displaying a wide variety of works from the sublime collection built up by the Roman Catholic Church, there are classical sculptures and masterpieces from the Renaissance period. It is little wonder that four to five million people visit it every year.
2. Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Dedicated to the work of Vincent Van Gogh and his contemporaries, this museum has the largest Van Gogh collection in the world, comprised of 200 paintings, 400 drawings and 700 letters by the man himself. There are also many incredible impressionist and post-impressionist pieces to see.
3. The Louvre, Paris, France
A famous landmark in Paris, The Louvre, is both one of the world’s largest museums and easily one of the most visited with 8 million visitors a year. It contains more than 380,000 objects and displays 35,000 works of art ranging from Egyptian antiquities to famous paintings such as The Mona Lisa.
4. The British Museum, London, England
There is an impressive collection of eight million works here and it is widely seen as the largest and most comprehensive in the world. Rare works include the Rosetta Stone and classical antiquities such as the Parthenon sculptures and Nereid monument. Entrance is free, with over six million visitors a year.
5. American Museum of Natural History, New York, USA
One of the most visited museums in New York City, the four floors include a display of huge dinosaur skeletons and a hi-tech planetarium. Only a small fraction of the awe-inspiring collections are able to be displayed at any given time to the five million annual visitors. There is something for all ages here!
