Incredibly colourful beaches around the world

Did you know that there are some extraordinary beaches on the earth where you will find sand of different colours - not just the golden hue you are familiar with? It may be orange, red, white, pink or even multi-coloured. We have shortlisted some dazzling beaches that have to be seen to be believed. 

1. Black sand beach - Punaluu beach, Hawaii, USA

Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, Punaluu is the world’s top black sand beach. The lava from the volcanoes flow into the ocean and then cools off creating the sand. Located on the southeastern Kau coast, the jet black shore is an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms on the fringe of the beach increases the scenic appeal. Swimming is not ideal but there are picnic areas. It is a unique feeling when you experience the dark sand between your toes.

2. Pink sand beach - Eleuthera, The Bahamas

When people think of a vacation in the Bahamas, the first things that come into their minds are casinos and fancy resorts. The Bahamas’ Harbour Island, breaks this stereotype. Famous for the mile long strip of pink sand, this unique coloured beach is a popular vacation spot for those who want to enjoy natural beauty. Red shells of foraminifera (a tiny marine animal) mixed with the white sand of the island creating the soft rosy color. The Bahamas is blessed with good weather throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Eleuthera is from December to May.

3. Purple sand beach - Big Sur, California, USA

When in Big Sur, California it is easy to get fascinated with the glorious coastline and Pfeiffer beach should be at the top of your list. The sand displays all the shades of purple possible and this makes it a special place. The cliffs, grassy meadows and the forests make the area even more dramatic.

Large deposits of manganese garnet that originate in the neighboring hills are washed down by the creek and carried to the beach along the Pacific, making its sand purple in colour. During winter, the purple sand become more visible especially after storms. The beach is located just outside the Big Sur State Park, which is about an hour south of Monterey.

4. White sand beach - Boracay, Philippines

White beach is most frequently associated with Boracay. The azure blue sea and the talcum powder white sand make it the perfect holiday destination in the Philippines. The four kilometres long beach welcomes every type of visitor, from the sun worshippers to the adventure seekers. At night, the beach comes alive with the sand castles that are lit with candles, bars and cosy restaurants, which stay open until dawn.

5. Orange sand beach - Porto Ferro, Sardinia, Italy

The beach of Porto Ferro is located at the northern side of the Italian island of Sardinia. It is covered by orange coloured sand, which originates from a mixture of unusual orange limestone found in that area, volcanic deposits and crushed shells. You can also see the unusually coloured sand dunes behind the beach on your way to Lake Baratz, which is the only natural salt lake in Sardinia. The beautiful beach attracts a great number of tourists each year and the clear water playing with the orange sand creates a mesmerizing effect.

6. Red sand beach - Santorini, Greece

There are several beaches in Santorini but the red beach is arguably one of the most famous and beautiful. Most visitors admit that Santorini is the strangest and most unusual place they have ever seen. The vertical cliffs, red and black pebbles, and the spectacular rock formation are simply superb. The volcanic nature of the island has created the beautiful landscape.

7. Multi-coloured sand beach - Rainbow Beach, Australia

Gorgeous Rainbow Beach is a tiny coastal town in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. It's name comes from the multi-coloured sand dunes overlooking the beach in the area, which includes as many as 74 different shades of sand. Most of the colours stem from the rich content of minerals in the sand.
