Discovering Port Blair Island, India

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (and an Indian territory), is located between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.  It has some fantastic tourist attractions including wonderful beaches, rare coral reefs and the infamous Cellular Jail.

These are some of the top attractions that should be on your must-see list.

1. Cellular Jail

Cellular Jail, famously known as Kala Pani (Black Water) during the British rule in India, is one of the main landmarks of Port Blair. The freedom fighters who fought for their independence were captured by the British and deported to this place, which was difficult to escape from because it was away from the mainland. It is now a national memorial monument and also houses a poignant museum.

2. Corbyn's Cove

Corbyn's Cove is a beach located just 7 km away from Port Blair. Surrounded by coconut palms, the beach is ideal for sunbathing and water sports. However, the presence of strong water currents makes the place a bit risky for swimming but you can paddle. Snake Island with pretty coral reefs is located close by.

Cinque Island is one of the most exotic islands in the entire archipelago. Extraordinary beaches surrounded by unspoiled coral reefs make this a perfect holiday destination. The island provides opportunities to have a closer view of the underwater coral gardens. Besides this, swimming, fishing and scuba diving can be done with prior permission from the Forestry Department.

4. Ross Island

The island used to be the residence of the British military and they kept track of activities in the Cellular Prison from here. Ross Island has many interesting buildings including a Church, Officers Club, Power House and cemetary of the dead British troops.  One of the buildings was The Subordinates Club, which was a mess for the junior commissioned officers.

5. Samudrika Marine Museum

This museum, run by the Indian Navy, aims to promote awareness about the ocean and sealife. It also displays the geography and history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There are tanks full of exotic corals and fish, miniature models of the islands and tribal pictures. It's well worth a visit.

There are few more place you should include on your itinerary including Havelock Island, Jolly buoy Island and Viper island - I hope you enjoy your trip here as much as I did!
