Best destinations for sport lovers

Sport is a marvellous thing and has the uncanny ability of bringing people of all walks of life together. So whether you are a hardened competitor or merely an armchair fan, here is our pick of top destinations for sport lovers.

1. Australia

Whether it's adventurous activities like skydiving and bungee jumping or watersports such as scuba diving and sailing, I think it's fair to say that Australia has got it covered when it comes to sport. This is a country that isn't lacking in top sporting competitions either, with the Australian Open tennis tournament always an eagerly awaited fixture on the Grand Slam calendar.

2. Brazil

Brazil is a country famous for its passionate love affair with football and although the World Cup might be over, this doesn't mean that the carnival of sport has come to an end just yet. In 2016, Rio de Janeiro will host the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games but if you cannot wait until then, why not check out all that Brazil has to offer, which includes hang gliding, mountain climbing or the Brazilian martial art Capoeira.

3. New Zealand

New Zealand is another nation in the Southern Hemisphere with a rich sporting heritage and is one of the top adventure sports destinations on the planet. With a mind-boggling range of activities on offer from black water rafting and zorbing to heli-hiking and skydiving, I think it's fair to say that you'll never want to leave!

4. England

Wembley Stadium, Lord's Cricket Ground, Silverstone Race Track, Old Trafford, Anfield and Wimbledon. This is a roll call of spectacular sporting venues that can only be found in England, a sport mad nation if ever there was one.

5. USA

The U.S. is another nation that can lay claim to being crazy about sport, including favourites such as ice hockey, baseball, basketball and American Football. It is also a top place to get involved in many different types of sporting activities. The vastness of the country gives visitors the change to do anything from surfing in California, to hiking and climbing in the many impressive national parks.

6. Jamaica

The Caribbean's Leading Sport Tourism Destination for 2012, Jamaica is a world leader for water sports, with fishing, diving and kayaking just some of the most popular pursuits on the island. That's not forgetting the spectacular golf courses and tennis courts here too.

7. South Africa

South Africa has a passionate following for rugby, cricket and football and is lucky enough to have the perfect climate and landscape for people to indulge in their sporting pastimes as well. From hiking, walking and golf to bungee jumping, swimming and diving, there aren't many sports you can't try in this beautiful country.
