Port Melbourne was the jump off point from the mainland to Tasmania, when we boarded the overnight cruise ship/ferry to Devonport (The Spirit of Tasmania). The fact that we boarded mid-late afternoon and then it was nightfall before we hit the open ocean (Bass Straight) illustrates how vast this area actually is.
