Those who knew Jody Goertzen well described her as “an inspiration to everyone… whose love for life showed in everything she touched.”
Jody was a single parent and a vibrant young mother who since birth struggled with a very serious congenital heart condition which did not keep her from living life to the fullest. Though not expected to live more than a few weeks, Jody persisted and went on to live a meaningful life for thirty years; choosing not to dwell on her own struggle but dedicating herself to helping others. Jody’s volunteer work with the Variety Heart Center provided support and encouragement to many families and their loved ones (referred to as her “Heart Heroes”) who were also dealing with heart problems.
“She had a passion for life and compassion for the less fortunate no matter what their problem may have been.”
On April 22, 2009 Jody’s heart beat for the last time when she finally passed away, leaving for her family the precious gift of her four year old daughter, Thera (Whose name is an anagram of “heart”).
To celebrate Jody’s life and to help ensure a brighter future for her daughter Thera, St. Luke’s Zion Lutheran Church is hosting a “rain or shine” outdoor benefit concert on Saturday, June 20th from 1:30 – 7:00pm at 2903 McPhillips Street North (2.5km North of Leila).
The all-ages event features some of Winnipeg’s finest musicians (The Lindsey White Band, Billious Pond, Jamie Rumley, RyeLee and more) with an incredibly diverse array of sound ranging from funk-rock & blues to gospel, country, bluegrass and rootsy folk.
Admission is free, with all donations/proceeds going to the Trust Fund set up for Thera. Come out and enjoy great food and excellent music in support of a wonderful cause!
“She always saw the best in everyone and could always find the beauty in the simplest of things.”
