Athens is a big, kind of multicultural city which spreads over the Attiki. There is an international airport (the one and only) called El. Venizelos. It is located far from the city , so you either have to take a taxi or the proastiakos train to get to the the city. My advice is to take the train, since it is cheaper. Places worth to visit is the Acropolis and the new Museum under it. Should you visit Attica in spring or summertime , you must see the temple of Poseidon which is in the southern part of Attica. There is a big range of different hotels , downtown and in the suburbs. Very expensive hotels are the Great CBritania, , the Divani - Caravel Palnd a few others.

Is it better to stay downtown without a car or to be distant from theceter by car.

I was there some times and I have to say to everybody who wants to go there - don't go in the summer, it's tooo hot really!

You shouldn't miss Akropolis and the Museum...also a nice walk arround Akropolis and Plaka....There is a hotel in Monastiraki Square called "A for Athens". Try to have a coffee in its roof-magnificent view!Gazi (keramikos) is a place with bars etc.... Mavili square near Syntagma has nice bars also....
