try to explore as much as possible - Brooklyn varies SO much per neighborhood (racially, ethnically, socio-economically, architecturally, etc.), you'll not even begin to know the borough until you start really looking around at different places.. remember: stay flexible in your idea of "a good time" - that varies per section too (part of what makes the borough so wonderful is this diversity).
