The World famous city for gems - by
Suranga 24th Jun 08
Rathnapuraya is one of the world famous cities for gems. The name of the city itself means “Gem City” in Sinhalese. The tourists attract not only gems, but also the natural beauty of the area. The waterfall “Bopath Ella” and the virgin forest “Sinharaja” enrich the natural beauty and add a global value for the city. Specially, the “Sinharaja” virgin forest is grouped with the world famous virgin forests.
The history of Rathnapuraya goes up to the era of the great king “Raavana” and since then it has a proud history.
Facilities for tourism are excellent and the hospitality of the Singhalese people of the area is unbelievable.
Rathnapuraya is the capital of the Sabaragamuwa province in Sri Lanka. It is about 100km away from Colombo.
