Polonnaruwa has ancient rock carvings of Buddha statues and the ruins of one time great and powerful kingdom. You can visit in your own vehicle and visit all the important places easily.

Polonnaruwa is one of the ancient capitals in Sri Lanka. After the Anuradhapuraya era, It begins the Polonnaruwa era in the history of Sri Lanka. The “Parakramabaahu” the great is the most powerful king of the Polonnaruwa era. Polonnaruwa is rich in a strong irrigation system and well-planed buildings thank to the ancient rulers. The lake “Parakrama Samudraya” is one among many lakes in the area. After being destroyed by he European – Christian invaders the great involvement of national hero like “Anagarika Dharmapala”, “Walisinghe Harishchandra” helped a lot to re-built the ancient city to its previous high standards.

Kala vewa  by Chathura    16th Apr 08
Lake called "Kala vewa" is a wonderful place to view near Polonnaruwa. It kept a bit far from Polonnaruwa a village called Minneriya. This Kala vewa was built by King Dhathusena before a few centuries .
