Sights of Colombo  by Lagath    1st Oct 08
Colombo is a modern city with plenty of buzz but few 'must-see' sights. Its historical center is the colonial Fort, which combined with a visit to the hectic bazaar & Dutch period legacy of the Pettah area to its east, can make for an interesting walking tour. Most of the rest of the city's sights are spread out in the southern suburbs, where the attractive wide boulevards of Cinnamon Gardens, the city's most exclusive area, are a highlight. There are the city's principal park & museums, & perhaps even more enticing, sample some of the fare that is fast making Colombo one of the culinary capitals of Asia. Increasingly the heart of modern Colombo lies to the south of the old centre, where the city's wealthy young elite rub shoulders in the fashionable boutiques & restaurants of Kollupitiya & Bambalapitiya. Earlier bomb blasts were frequently done by LTTE terrorists in Colombo but now, government has blocked their activites remarkably well.

Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka which is a beautiful island off the southern tip of Indian ocean. It has many world heritage sites and one of the best beaches. The island has a buffet of attractions to please each tourists taste!! If you like to relax with nature, it's got game reserves and rain forests and if you like to get that perfect tan, you can hit the beaches. For those who seeks adventure, there is river rafting, mountain climbing, cycling, trekking, etc. If you like to party then you can hit the many night spots in Colombo and for those who'd like to try their luck, they can check the casino's. the main tourist destinations in the island are Negambo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Arugambay,Mt. Lavinia, Kandy, Habarana, Yala, etc. The Friendly people and cheap bargains are a treat!! Most of the people speak english and can be very helpful. It is a place "Where time stands still"!!
