I love the reality of Makassar. It is not a tourist spot, but has lots of interesting things to see and do. Also it is the gateway to real tourist spots like Tana Toraja - a couple of hundred KM north of the city. My favorite thing is to sit along Pantai Losari (Losari Esplanade) of an afternoon and watch the sun go down. The city faces due west. With a gentle breeze blowing, small fishing boats drifting along the bay and the sun dipping below the small coconut tree studded islets along the horizon, it is truly wonderful. Then go for some of the city's rightly famous seafood dinners.
