Jyväskylä ist the capital of the region central finland (keski-suomi). it has 85.000 inhabitants and it is a modern, vibrant student city surrounded by a number of lakes. jyväskylä is especially famous for its universities and the neste oil rally which is held every year in august.
A small town with a big university, Jyvskyll, has like most of Finland, has a good clean feel. The center of town is compact, but has many of good places to eat and drink. Ski-jumping takes place at the edge of town and the Rally of Finland passes through here too, while JYP are the local ice hockey team. The bus service in the town is also excellent, but tails off later at night, so be careful. Also buy a day ticket, they are cheaper and will save your money, especially if you stay out by the ski-jumping resort. Natural beauty is abundant and the town has many examples of Alvar Aalto's architecture. Well worth visiting if you are going to be in Central Finland, but maybe not worth going out your way for.
