If you arrive by car from the north, down the A690 and you catch your first glimpse of the cathedral as you come over the hill near the Giles Gate, you get the impression of a grand old city and Durham is. It is one of England's nicest cities and it is steeped in a long history. The locals are among the friendliest in England and you can have a great night out in the city. Good pubs, clubs and restaurants are everywhere, some with a price to match too. Well worth a visit and a great stopping off point before heading north to Scotland.
