Cusco was once the heart of the Inca Empire. Nowadays, it's the heart of the tourist industry in Peru. It doesn't matter the season, this city is always full of tourists looking to fulfil a dream, to visit Machu Picchu. The city has changed a lot, new trendy restaurants and hotels have opened in the last years. But there is room for everybody, from the low budget to the up scale travellers. What has not changed is the magic feeling of being in a city where history will meet you around each corner. From Inca palaces to Spanish churches, there is always something to see in this city of kings and conquistadors. I must say that what I like the most of this city is its pace. Everything is slower at this altitude (11,000 feet / 3,000 meters) thereby, tourists have the perfect excuse to take it easy and relax. A must is to chill at the main square just after lunch and engage in a conversation with other tourists or locals, get your shoes shine or buy some postcards.

I also agree, 1 week it's way too short, there is so much stuff to do. I would recommend at least to be there for 2 weeks.
