I did not like Montego Bay. Although its possessed of considerable natural beauty, the contrast between the wealth of the resorts and the relative poverty of the town was very shocking to me, and the "hip strip" with its bars and tourist touts felt tacky. I also got mugged when I wandered into the wrong part of the main town.

I have been walking all over Mobay since 1989 and deal with beggars/hucksters all the time. I am respectful and have never even felt there was a possibility of being mugged. I am a white American. Please describe your "mugging".

hook up with a local before you come here so that you can get the real experience of the town.

Watch out for exit taxes and driving on the right side of road. Mountainous roads can be hazardous!!

Montego Bay is the tourist capital of Jamaica. But like every other city it is not perfect. Visitors are advised to be careful please do not venture into any dark corners or lanes. Please enjoy the beaches and the overall friendly atmosphere. The 'Hip-Strip' is cool a lot of nice restaurantS are there do not be afraid to sample their tasty Jamaican menu.

Montego bay is one of the best places to get the best of both worlds, the real Jamaican culture and lifestyle along with the hotels and clubs for vacationers and visitors alike. On the outskirts of the city are many attractions. The nightlife is always buzzing with activities, the is always a parties every night. And from Montego bay you are a short distance to all the other beautiful places in Jamaica. In January every year the Jamaica Jazz and Blues festival in held here and on July 18 - 25 come experience the Biggest and the best Reggae music event one earth. Reggae Sumfest.

Definitely go with a local tour guide if you can. But make sure it is someone you can trust. The larger companies tend to pay low wages to their guides forcing them to essentially survive on tips.

The tourist capital of Jamaica. Such a beautiful sight around 6pm in the evening. So much to see , do & buy. Too many foods to sample. You can't leave without sampling the ackee & salt fish. Lovely restaurants from which to savour the local rum punches; if you want to temper down the dark rum or the wines, you can have a half cup of blue mountain coffee. it works all the time. Beautiful beaches to gaze upon & many places of interest to visit; lovely Montego bay in beautiful Jamaica;
