Kozhikode (Calicut), the most important region of Malabar in yesteryears, was the capital of the powerful Zamorins and also a prominent trade and commerce center.
Kozhikode District found a place in the World History with the discovery of Sea Route to India in 1498 by the Portuguese Navigator Vasco Da Gama. A monument is constructed here to commemorate the historical landing.
Its contribution to all round development of the district in trade, commerce and economic development over the years is spectacular. Kozhikode city is the marketing centre for commodities like pepper coconut, coffee, rubber, lemon grass oil etc.
Basking in the idyllic setting of the serene Arabian Sea on the west and the proud peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, this district with the serene beaches, lush green countryside, historic sites, all combine to make Kozhikode a popular tourist destination filled with a warm ambience to fascinate a visitor.

THE BRITISH COINED THE NAME--CALICUT. IT HAS REFERENCE TO THE ONCE FAMOUS CALICO PRINTING ON TEXTILES.

Mr. WILLIAM LOGAN HAS WRITTEN A BOOK NAMED MALABAR MANUAL. THIS IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MASTER PLAN FOR WHOLESOME DEVELOPMENT OF MALABAR AREA WHICH IS NOT ADHERED TO NOWADAYS. DIVERSIONS TAKE PLACE DUE TO VARIOUS REASONS INCLUDING BUSINESS INTERESTS. THE MOST IMPORTANT PROPOSAL IS TO HAVE AN INLAND WATER WAY FROM ALAPPUZHA TO KASARGOD WHICH RUNS THROUGH THE HEART OF KOZHIKODE. KANOLI CANAL IS A PART OF THIS WATER-WAY.

Myself Anand from Calicut.Speaking about Calicut, Calicut is the place where Vasco Da Gama, a Portuguese sailor landed his foot first in Indian soil. Calicut is known for very calm and straight forward people who are ready to help you any time.Mananchira square,Calicut beach,Kappad beach, Beypore, SM street, Chaliyam, Kuttiyadi, Thusharagiri, Peruvannamoozhi, Sarovaram biopark, Kadalundi, Kallai, Feroke etc are places one should visit. Calicut is famous for its yummy cuisines. Chicken biriyani, Appam, Fish curry, Kallummakaya (Oyster) etc are very much popular. You can go to Paragon hotel, Sagar hotel, Topform, Al-Bake, Plaza, Salkara, Beach hotel, Bombay hotel, French restaurant or Zain's restaurant to have a try at Calicut dishes.
