Rosie 23rd Dec 2008

I stayed in Tampere for the whole of November 2008. It is possibly the most beautiful place I have ever been to, and I look forward to returning in May and June of 2009. I never ran out of things to do, and did every one of them on foot. The hike to Pyynikki, the walk up to Pispala, the lights of Hmeenkatu, and the amazing Tammerkoski, seeing the views from Nsinneula, as well as meeting Janne Ojanen and the Tappara warriors... It was an incredible journey. Finland is an amazing country - heaven on earth :)

History

Gustav III
The City of Tampere was established by King of Sweden Gustav III in 1779, on the bank of The Tammerkoski rapids.

Tampere has been an industrial pioneer in Finland since the very beginning. Finland’s first paper mill started operation in 1783, and the first paper machine was engaged at the J.C. Frenckell & Son’s factory in 1842.

The cotton factory established in 1820 by James Finlayson grew to become the country’s first large-scale industrial establishment. The first electric light in the Nordic countries was also lit in Finlayson’s modern production facilities in 1882.

Or if you want to try something very local, you can buy our speciality in Tampere - black sausages with lingonberry jam. You can find this in market places, for example Laukontori.

In summer I recommend Arboretum in Hatanpää. It's a very nice place to have a picnic or just a walk / jogging. It's a big garden.

Tampere is a legendary ice hockey town in Finland. We have two teams in the first league and with long history. Therefore we have an ice hockey museum. We also have a spying museum and the only Lenin museum in the world.

We have many restaurants, pubs and bars. Nightlife is great thanks to very many students living here. For tourists I would recommend a viking restaurant named Harald, the oldest pizzeria called Napoli (over 100 pizzas on menu), Spanish restaurant called Salud (granted the best pepper steaks in Finland).

If your going in the winter make sure you wear plenty of layers as it can get REALLY cold. Beautiful lakes and walking and make sure you visit the look out tower
