A nice little town that is the capital of Lapland --- or so it says everywhere around the town. The town is practically surrounded by a huge lake, and the place is full of photo opportunities. Lots of nature walks and plenty of ski facilities and the likes.
We have Reindeer on our front lawn the first night we arrived --- that was pretty special.

The last McDonalds before the north pole (that at least made the kids day)....

Santa and the Arctic Border is only minutes away.

We went to the local wildlife park - pretty cool creatures there which your not going to see elsewhere. A pregnant polar bear, moose, wolverines, a silver fox...Santa's home, also. We took a bus there...something about the state of Lapland, is the buses are remarkably different between Sweden and upper Finland. Sweden is all electronic bus stations and displays and easy to get around. In Finland, between Rovaniemi and Oulu we took a bus from a printed display on the window of a dairy cum bus station, and the driver picked up and dropped off a whole lot of school kids,on back country roads, then parked in a driveway of a farm, got out of the bus and left, with us still on there...we were getting a bit worried, when five minutes later another bus driver turns up, and takes over the run ...(Whew!)...reindeer herds were grazing, and all the houses we passed were painted primary colours with white trim...what's that about???

As Rovaniemi is my origin i like to remind that what is unic in Rovaniemi is that people here have deep connection to the nature. This you can not see from a surface but in some details and behaviour. People truly respect and love nature. But for good look to Rovaniemi, please go for a slopes. And top of the hill what is five minutes from centre and you will see river pass the city and connect to the other in the city. And then you can understand the location of a city and why it is called gate to the wild Lapland. Landscape is very harmony and beatify.

We went there from Australia in May - stayed in a motorhome which we took North. It was the best time - no tourists, and still frozen lakes etc. One tip - don't take motorhomes onto dirt roads. Just North-East of Rovaniemi (80km), I took a short cut in the rain on a gravel road, which deteriorated to mud as we went further. 5 hours of digging the wheels out of the mud wasn't nice. Eventually had to find a tractor to pull me out. All the main roads are excellent, and very little traffic in May.

At Rovanimi train station, a driver from Lapland Safaris picks you up, and in a chain-wheeled four-by-four takes you to a log-cabin house, before a snowmobile ride through the hills, whizzing over the countryside and icy lakes. There’s a chance to stop at the Arctic Circle Reindeer Farm, a sweet log-cabined working farm within a snowy forest, where you can drive the furry creatures from a fur lined sled. Then lunch is on offer of, er, reindeer, at the folksy Nili restaurant, followed by a visit to the spellbinding Arktikum museum, with its displays of Sami life, Arctic creatures, icebergs and igloos.

Rovaniemi, in northern Finland, is a town like no other. For a start, it has fewer people than reindeer. Dozens of men folk sport big white beards. And it has an enormous post office: a great log cabin in the middle of nowhere. But then the town is, theoretically, the home of Santa Claus, the destination to which thousands of children are brought to indulge fantasies of flying reindeer, sleighs and a red-suited giver of gifts.
