See Ganga Aarati(evening prayers) on Dashaswamedh Ghat around7 pm.Sprinkle Ganga jal (water from the river Ganges.Visit temple of the Kashi Vishwanath,Sankat Mochan Temple.In the morning visit Temple of Maa Annapurna and have Prasadam there(food).Proceed to Saranath where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon to his discilples

The beauty is that river Ganges is flowing in a shape of crescent moon since centuries.It is called Varanasi due to confluence of river Varuna and Asi.

Burning ghats where everyone want that his life should end there. City of temples many many things re there and it is not possible to explain here when you see it and feel it then you really undestand varanasi.

Friends i would suggest not to come during the rush seasons as described by Shibani.
If someone has a taste for rush then metropolitons may be better idea . Try to come in tranquility. Yes it is different that every 3rd year comes a month of adhi mas or purushottam mas when people do parikrama of kashiji - that period though being full of rush but the area beign very large dilutes the pressure and one has opportunity to visit less visited areas also.

varanasi is very old and historical city but tourist guide and some migrated out siders have in distroying order of the city but over all its very good city always use here only authorised guide and authorised cab for tourist movements
