One of the not regular route to Manali is via Pathankot. If you are not coming via Chandigarh...this is the route you would like to take. You should also have some extra time on your hand to enjoy the beatuiful way from P'kot to Manali. |

Kullu was on the way...so a number of river rafting avenues are there..i enjoyed one of them..we were six people and hired one full raft for Rs 1200.then we moved on to Manali town..had wonderful punjabi khana at a chic Punjabi resturant downtown... headed to Solang valley...watched its beauty and then retired in the foothills of Solang...with Snow clad hilltops watching over... Rohtang was closed due to snow.Next day set out to watch the temples..and the town..had wonderful Chinese food at Chopsticks..again in downtown.
my wife did some shopping. while i inquired about some lodges for next trip....when i would have more time on hand. HP TDC offers very good and affordable options..you could book by depositing amount in advance in their account. they are mostly full in peak season, so plan and book at least 20 days ahead...if in summers. Bon Voyage!

If you get tired of the heat and pollution of the big cities, take a 40 min flight from Delhi to Kullu, then a scenic 1.5 hour drive to Manali. You won't be disappointed. Truly beautiful. In mid summer it was about 17 to 20 or degrees. The people are relaxed. Absolutely definitely go to the Lazy Dog for a meal or evening hang out and a nice shisha. There are lots of nice places to stay too. I like the Johnson hotel, located in Old Manali on the road to the Lazy Dog. Just go there and chill out for a few days. If you still want to do more hire a taxi or car and take a day drive to the Routang Pass. It is not so far from Manali but te winding road up the Himalayas is pretty bad and slow, but the scenery is stunning. Also if Manali is 17, Routang is about 3. When you get there you can take a horse (terribly expensive frankly) or just enjoy the walk. All up a great break for a few days.
