Madrid is the most cultural city I have seen. When I was in Madrid I lived in the called Gran via de San Francisco, which is near the Plaza de Espana. From there you can go into town in 10 Minutes and visit the pedestrian area, where people go out to drink something on their way through the town. What has impressed me is the sight you have of the town. Everywhere are monuments and nice buildings that give a far stretched impression of the culture the Spanish conserve. The Escorial is one of those fantastic monuments. If you go from the plaza de Espana into town you pass this monument which is extraordinary. I have had a wonderful time during winter, which was accompanied by the extraordinary illuminations of the town due to Christmas.

Madrid probably have not any wonder monument as attraction, as could have Roma or Paris, but have many monuments to see, remember, Spain was the biggest imperium in the world during XVII, XVIII centuries,so you can find many palaces, great gardens/parks as Retiro Park. Metro system is very good to visit all the city, metro goes to everywhere for a very cheap price (starting from 1 euro per travel), but beware, in center areas there are many thief, keep your money safe. For food, you can go to many place from the classic Spanish Tapas till very good restaurant, but remember, Spanish bar and restaurant workers most of them are from latinoamerica and practically none of them speak English or other language, only Spanish, but you can find the menu chart in English. If you want to clubbing, Madrid have an intense night live, you can find thousand of people clubbing a weekend even at 5 am. Literally you can spend all the night clubbing and drinking.

There are several theories regarding the origin of the name "Madrid". According to legend Madrid was founded by Ocno Bianor (son of King Tyrrhenius of Tuscany and Mantua) and was named "Metragirta" or "Mantua Carpetana". Others contend that the original name of the city was "Ursaria" ("land of bears" in Latin), due to the high number of these animals that were found in the adjacent forests, which, together with the strawberry tree ("madroo" in Spanish), have been the emblem of the city from the Middle Ages.

I'll be in Madrid for work in a couple of days, with little (meaning 'none') time to explore. I'd like to at least have a good meal. Any suggestions? I'll be staying at the AC Hotel La Finca. Thank you! Mark

Javier - Thank you! Each of these suggestions will help me remember that I am actually 'IN' Spain...instead of just at the same hotel in a different country.

For all who want to visit Madrid, I want to say that Madrid is a very touristy town, I suggest looking for hotels or Accommodations near the Gran Via, Good hotels,
You can visit the old town, called Madrid de los Austrias, v isit the Almudena Cathedral and the Palacio Real, as well as the many museums we have, the more important the Museo del Prado.
Now especially in this time of year can be very beautiful but the City for the Christmas lighting.
Very good restaurants and bars, to eat comfortably and cheaply, or just tapas, and
good wine.
Good time also to visit the city and get a good bargain.
can tell you, one who is from Madrid and I am delighted
of this City

Do you have any suggestions for a restaurant to go to, where I can enjoy a bit of the culture and food? I will be staying at the AC Hotel La Finca. A place you can not miss in Madrid, when you leave the march is "the wolf's mouth." Good atmosphere, good music and from there what you want;-)
