Drive, fly or bus from either Darwin or Adelaide. You'll need a car to see the amazing sites, eg Stanely Chasm for the midday sun etc, or do a tour. Kings Canyon is awesome at dawn or dusk but take a torch. The Rock & Olgas also worth the trip. Most sites are a fair way from the town & tours only spend a very short time but camping is good if you are up for the outback experience.

Stay for a while. If you do the normal couple of nights stay on the way to the rock you don't get a feel for the place. In all spent about 4 months there and made some amazing friends. There are some amazing trips out to places like Palm Valley and if you're there at the right time the Henley Regatta is a lot of fun.

I have been to this town twice - first time in 92, and the 2nd in 93. I was impressed in both cases.

Hey guys, we three went to Darwin by The Ghan from Adelaide, and we stopped in Alice Springs. it was an amazing trip especially if you went to there by the train. We joined a 3 days tour in Alice Springs, and same as in Darwin.

Best way to see Australia is to take a Greyhound Type Bus and all the places conveniently and cheaply. I did it - please read my travel tale http://www.cstn.org/reports/spacific/australia_bus_sydney_04.html
