I lived here more than 50 years. Its has violence, drunken behaviour, drunk drivers, rapes and racism. The city smells because men piss everywhere at night time when at night clubs.

And its not safe to go out at night time.

Read the Melbourne newspapers. You'll get a true indication then.

Peter, I migrated to Australia 11 years ago. I travel a lot so I can tell you it is one of the best cities to live in and visit. It has it's own culture and I love diversity of Australia. Late night crime is there in all metro cities in the world with some exceptions e.g Singapore. It does not make the city and surroundings less attractive. For visitors, get to the federation sequare opposite to flinders street railway station there is information building with everything you need to know being visitor you can also visit tourism Victoria website for more details.

Melbourne is the coolest place in Australia to Stay or Visit. All different nationalities makes it one world. What a lovely weather! Four seasons a day. Home of Australian open, G P motor race, The Great Melbourne Cricket Ground . Every where Australian Footy Fever. What a amazing Australian Game.

Great rivalry exists between Adelaide & Melbourne, but Melbourne is a great place to visit.

Long list of cafe lanes, multiple parks, casino, stadiums, night life, surroundings include travel to mt buller in winter, great ocean road in summer, beaches, wineries, Phillip island and list goes on.
