Marie 's tip about Salzburg, Austria 4th Aug 2008

Salzburg has a population of around 150,000 though in summer it is usally much higher than this. It is the capital of the district of Salzburg. The river on which the city stands is the River Salzach. The Old Town stands on the left bank of the river though of course it has now spread over to the other side of the river.

The main attractions are: cathedral, the fortress, and the birthplace of Mozart. The city plays hosts the annual Mozart Festival every January and also there is the annual Salzburg Festival held in July and August.

It is the gateway for some spectacular scenery for the mountains with some spectacular walks.

Visit the smaller towns outside of Salzburg. My favorites were Unterach am Attersee, Mondsee (where the Sound of Music was filmed), St Wolfgang, and Bad Ischl. You'll find the most amazing thermal spa in Bad Ischl!

Hallo Anna Maria!

What an enticing name! In Salzburg you should not miss a classical concert by musicians dressed in 18th century costumes at the ''St.Peter's Keller'', maybe have your supper in the downstairsRestaurant. You could also attend a dinner concert at the ''Festung'' (the castle on the hill).... and you should not miss a boat trip upriver on the ''Salzach'' (the river that separates the old town from the new town) combined with a tour through the casle of ''Hellbrunn'', which was built by the catholic archbishop for his mistress with whom he had several children (I believe it was eight)...

One of the most beautiful towns in Austria situated in the breathtaking region Salzkammergut. I was there in summer. It is a lively place full of events. It is a haven for anybody interested in architecture, arts, classical music. I will go back for sure.
