I've lived here about two years as a professional, tis a college town but there is a huge retired population, and us in the middle have a good time too. There're local music events, great wine!, sea sports and hiking! It's best if you rent a car as things are pretty spread out if you want to go wine tasting and the beach in one day. But a bike can work too, if your into that sort of thing. It's a temperate climate, some say it's Mediterranean. Not really sure the best time to visit...may be the fall. It's odd here because you can drive 20 minutes and get a heat difference of 10 to 40 degrees F in some seasons.

San Luis Obispo, California is a wonderful college town. I lived here for three years now and enjoy every minute of it. Even though I've graduated from Cal Poly I'm going to try to find a job here in town so that I don't have to move away.
