Whether you are in Kansas City for just a day or many days, if you have time check out the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It is free and open every day of the week, although the hours vary. The exhibits range from antiquity to modern art, and the museum is large enough that it could take days to properly see everything. The Nelson also has an extensive outdoor sculpture garden, which is very enjoyable when the weather is good. Whenever I have guests from out of town, I try to take them there because its such an awesome place. As a bonus, its centrally located near the Plaza (shopping, restaurants, a few hotels) and only a few blocks from several major bus lines.
