When I was there about 2 years ago I felt very safe and secure, just about everyone there was secret police or was working for the secret police , from shop keepers to the people that appeared to be just shoppers. I tried to by a picture of the colonel with his multitude of medals I was turned in by the shopkeeper and a secret police man cross examined me as to why I wanted such a picture of the great leader, I caved in and bought a fairly boring picture of Gahdaffi. I expect it's all changed now. I went to look at the amazing Roman remains, which were worth seeing.
I went to Tripoli , there was a Castle or fort in the process of being renovated, that was OK , the rest of the town was very interesting and charming, the people seemed friendly, but there was a large para military presence, some of our group posed for photos with the soldiers , they seem happy and relaxed, this was about six monthes ago.
I've only ever been to Miami airport which I spent two visits which lasted about 12 hours in total So you can say like the character in the film Terminal I got to know the place pretty well
So much to see , I stayed in a hotel unfortunatly right next to the area that had be taken over by demonstrators, very load music and shouting, but handy for the shops, watch out for the traffic, it's mental
