Human Trafficking Summit Starts Today in Miami: October 28th, 2009 MIAMI – A two-day summit addressing human trafficking starts today. The event seeks to focus attention on human trafficking in Florida and is a prelude to a human trafficking task force meeting Friday. “While many people may have heard of human trafficking, they tend to think of it as occurring primarily in hidden, backstreet operations in Asia or Europe,” said State Senator Arthenia Joyner (D-Tampa). “Unfortunately, Florida is among the top geographical hotspots for this illegal and immoral activity. Marvin Leigh Madkins, 29, was convicted in March for recruiting minors for prostitution and transporting them across state lines.
