Are you referring to the west coast of the north or south island?
In the south island maybe around Hokitika / Greymouth but I'm not sure. In the north island I have not been to the west coast really.

Raglan is a fantastic surf beach and further south in Taranaki is also well known for great surf - just ask Tom Cruise who fell in love with the area when filming 'The Last Samurai'. Just north of Wellington are also some good spots. I'm not familiar with spots in the South Island but I'm sure there are some great places.

Don't get confused. West Coast is a provence in the South Island. It is really worth visiting as it has native forests and scenery found nowhere else on the planet. It is not so good for surfing though I believe as it has shingle beaches and treacherous seas which makes places like Punakaiki (situated between the towns of Greymouth and Westport) so spetacular. The west coast of the North Island, particularly west auckland and taranaki are better places for surfing possibly.

Hi, There are also fantastic Surf Be4aches in the far north of New Zealand's north island. Also both coasts are close together and beaches face every direction. Big sweeping sandy beaches with warm weather. Reef Point at Ahipara is one of the best. you can get a 500 meter ride.

Yes Piha is ok, but gets a bit crowded now the road is improved. Also there is often a strong rip going around the back of Lion Rock, so you have to be careful there. Also Karekare, just to the south provides some good waves. There are also a couple of small beaches just to the north of Piha. They are Whites and Anawhata but you have to walk quite a way down hill to them. Nothing like the variety available in the Far North.

Hi, im from the north island / Auckland, so Raglan or Piha are good surf spots. West coast is the Tasman so can be rough. the east coast is the pacific, you know tropical weather, hula skirts and coconuts....
