Both are great cameras. Spec wise, the nikon seems to trump slightly as it is the newer of the 2 models. The flip screen on the Canon will be advantageous if you are shooting a lot of video.
If it was me, and I was starting from scratch, I would suggest buying whichever camera body was cheapest and spend a bit more on the actual lens you will use with it.
Look for a higher aperture lens which will give you more creative options and give better results in low light.
My best advice is go to the camera shop and play with both models. Get a feel for each camera. Try to adjust things settings. Whichever model makes most sense and allows you to make changes most quickly will be the best camera for you to work from. There is no right or wrong answer, it is personal taste.
At this level though, I would avoid other cameras like pentax or sony as accessories and spares are slightly harder to come by.
I hope this helps.

They are alike. But ask on a professional store... they will give you reasons to buy one or to buy the other. You will have to choose which is better for your desires (and pockets :) )

I wouldnt go by the names, though i personally own a Nikon D90, all the cameras are similar in structures, a little here and there, first decide if you are in a position to spend more, then go for the higher megapixel camera. Thats simply because you get a better resolution. I would suggest you go for Canon, as their lenses are better. My friend has a Canon and his quality of pics is better than Nikon lenses. It is very important to note however, that it is not the camera, but the eye behind the lens that matter most.

Go for a good camera, look for a larger CCD sensor, the price will be a bit higher, but you get better pics.

I believe its the eye behind the camera that makes all the difference. Buy any of the two but invest in better professional grade lenses.
