My mother used to tell me to learn early because for her was hard and for her older friends was harder. My father taught me since I was 14 at our beach house, just parking forward and backward for months with automatic car. Lesson was from 5 to 10 minutes. Then, we would drive on a rocky road for steering wheel control, few meters each time and for weeks or months until next stage. He told me, anyone can drive faster, but the hard part is to drive very slow, so that I would practice nudging a bit the red foot.

My cousin gave me lessons on Sundays mornings on closed supermarket parking lots with standard car when I was 17. So once my father got the student permit, it was easier, and then the hardest one was a practice with my boyfriend, hillls for 3 hours, until car passed out! but when I had my test I could backwards in pretty tight area, where doors wouldnt open, so instructor passed me!

Yes, start early as Maria mention. And it's a good idea to start training on open place. Start, stop, backing, follow some maket markings, parking and then continue on smal curvy roads so you learn to control the feeling of the car and control the cars placing in the road.
