well it depends up on the situation ,,if there is more light then u dont need a tri pod ,,if htere is less light then u must use a tripod ,,if u want u can see some of my works

By amateur cameras, do you mean aim and shoot, or dslrs, both are amateur, the difference however, is that in the case of aim and shoot, the focusing is automatic, where as in the case of a dslr, you have the manual options. the distance and the subject are not very important as far as the focus is concerned, both need the same clarity, and once you know your menu options of your camera, it will be easier.
