to climb a mountain for say 3 days, say kilimanjaro, how far in advance exercise would i need i.e. 3 weeks, 2 months etc?

Randy Faucette from Windsor, Canada Randy
I hiked Mt Kili, Kinabalu & Annapurna circuit, there is no real mountaineering involved. There are several routes to choose and they have different advantages and disadvantages. The hike itself should be no problem for most reasonably fit persons. The real challenge is the altitude. This is a high as many tourist people will ever reach unless in the Andes(Cerro Aconcaugua/Tupengato) or Himalayas and even in those places, you may go through mountain passes or trails that require hiking but not mountaineering skills. Each person reacts differently at altitude. Even though you have been up high before, your body may react differently this time so it is important to know your body and the signs of Mountain Sickness. Having a good guide is important. Having a good time,,priceless!
