I once, in 1987, when it was illegal to do so, flew THROUGH the Grand canyon. We had been flying north up the Little Grand canyon, and without us knowing it, we had flown all the way up to Lake Powell right down in the canyon! It was spectacular! We then landed and skinny dipped in Lake Mead!!

When you do go, plan to stay at least a couple of days. The South Rim has lots to offer, but take your time.

The North Rim is only open about 5-8 months out of the year being that it's at a higher elevation than the South Rim. If you're really adventurous, you can take a mule trip down to the canyon floor & spend a night at Phantom Ranch. You can also hike down via your own power to Phantom Ranch, however if I remember right, reservations are highly recommended.

OK, probably check website, think best time to go is spring or fall, unless used to heat! Think AmTrak has train that goes through up the wazzoo.

Its been quite a few years since I was there but one thing I can tell you is to guard your food. I was amazed at how a squirrel just climbed up this lady's body to get to her ice cream. They were so use to people that they had absolutely no fear.
