Ah yes... first trip to Africa, on my own, during UN peace keeping operations. Can't leave the hotel, half the town cut off by rebels and sporadic gun fights near the airport. Nice. The usual problems with women hassling you - but hey, it's Africa. The beer's crap too, stay away from Flag!

I would think that the political atmosphere has improved significantly since the ouster of the last president but there is at least a 10 to 20 year period that will be needed to rebuild the city/country before the tourists could feel comfortable there again.

I lived in Abidjan for 4 years (1988 - 1992) at the time the city and the country was reeling from the collapse of coffee and cocoa prices. The City one referred as the Beruit of Africa also had to deal with the influx of refugees from the civil war in Liberia. When the long time President, Felix Houphet Bogney died all bets were of and like Yugoslavia after Tito ethnic rivalries took the country on the inevitable road to civil war.
