Salvador, Bahia, the first capital of Brazil, is a beautiful city, rich of historical and cultural aspects, inherited by the miscegenation of different ethnic groups such as Africans, Native Indians and Europeans. You can see this mixture in the religion, cuisine and cultural manifestation. It has 51 kilometers of beautiful beaches and a wonderful weather all year round.

Tim 's tip about Recife, Brazil  (with reference to Beach outings, IT, Restaurants) 25th Mar 2012

This is a city which has some interesting things to see - go to Olinda and to the beaches to the south (Porto de Galinhas, Muro Alto, Tamandare) as well as visiting the old part of town in the centre. However, it also has a lot of problems - terrible traffic, poor roads and generally low quality of service wherever you go. There are some good restaurants and also a lot of overpriced and pretentious ones, so chose carefully!! People here are not as open as in other parts of Brazil, so don't expect everyone to smile at you!

I can imagine i.e. I have experienced the heat up north, it is much more pleasant higher up. This is where royals spent their hot summers away from Rio - Petropolis - or the british high up near Nepal for summer. Enjoy the easter break. Sounds fun with horses and in BRA there are enough trails right? Normally people would head for the beach but I am sure you have enough of beaches in Recife with their "Miami" atmosphere. Do you per chance live in one of those highrise buildings. Nice view, but.... Yes you will enjoy the UK, if not just for the cooler weather. I remember spending summer here, summer in EU, summer here etc etc for 4 years. I was sooooo glad to experience a fresh cool morning in EU, people thought I was crazy, who wouldn't like summer all year round? But as with everything, heat, sunshine etc. all the time gets boring. A healthy mix of everything, is ideal. I'm returning to Germany from May for about 2-3 months. I want to try a round the worl

Robban 's tip about , Brazil  (with reference to IT, Beach outings, Fishing) 29th Mar 2011

I consider Rio the most beautiful tropical mountains scenery falling into a urban jungle situated on the ocean !
I recommend to visit the old "bairro" of Santa Teresa on the hills with its colonial buildings and narrow streets. Also the "centro" area worth it, lot os colonial buildings too (a visit to Confetaria Colombo in rua Gonçalvo Dias is a must!). The nicest beaches are in Barra da Tijuca and if you have a car or preferable a motorcycle go to Prainha after Recreio and up to the hill there's this fish restaurant where you can eat on the terasse in the middle of the tropical forest among local apes and have a great scenery in front of you (delta of a rio).

Elysian 's question about Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 18th Jul 2011

I am planning a holiday in Rio next year alone. Any safety tips? What areas should I avoid? I'm really looking forward to this trip.

Claudia D Claudia
As you come alone, it will be safer to come for a travel agency and walk always accompanied by a guide, here you can hire tours in hotels where you stay. I suggest that you stay in the south of RJ (Copacabana) and if you desire you can schedule tours for Angra and Parati (places of beaches) Petropolis and Teresopolis (mountains). Have a good trip!

Near from Rio we have Petropolis, the Imperial City. There was built a palace for the emperor stay in the summer. There are others town which preserves the buildings of 18-19 centuries, like Tiradentes/MG and Paraty/RJ. It worths a visit. Salvador/BA is another interesting city to visit. If you came to Rio, let me know. I´ll give you more tips and introduce you my mother that is a History teacher. She will be glad to talk about brazilian history.
