The best source when you will build your famiy tree, is your grandparents. Make sure that they mark all old family-photos with name and birthday.

Use Ancestry . com's Free month offer. (a few years ago) My family worked almost 24/7 for two months and it didnt cost a penny :)
Enter card details and Ancestry will bill you after the first month is over.
The "TRICK" is...To phone in and cancel a day or two before. You will/should still have access to all features of Ancestry till the full month trial ends.
Then just take out another free month in a different family members name.(different email address, different credit card)
**WARNING** Go a minute over the month and you "WILL" Be Charged direct to your submitted Credit card.

visit local archives for nearest information, ask as many relatives as possible and remember that your ancestors might have been known by different names. Often people were given nicknames that stuck. Ancestry and find my past are excellent sites and some libraries offer ancestry for free. Google your family name, it is surprising what comes up. If you know where some relatives are buried, go and look at the graves, morbid, but can come up with more information.

I've just heard that the new Family Tree Maker 2012 has been released and it's being sold at 19.99 but i've read on Facebook trhat there is a £3 discount available at My History in the UK if you use a voucher code 'FTM593'. I've just ordered my copy. If anybody wants to ask me about using the program just go ahead.

I use the LDS new familysearch.com, couldn't afford Ancestry.com as needed worldwide subscription. Ask your immediate relatives & cousins etc for copies of certificates, dates & events in their own lives too.
