Did you know that before the city of Jakarta in Jakarta called, formerly called "Jayakarta" later replaced by the Dutch become "Batavia" because the local dialect of "Batavia" was renamed of Betawi. So the native of the city called the Betawi.
I have found it challenging to learn much about local history because most locals don't think of it as important. It usually takes a bit of effort to get them to explain and to show. However, once started... it often becomes unstoppable! You hear the best stories, find the most "real" places to eat/drink, etc. It's quite nice and worth the effort. Forget the tourist traps. Explore the real stuff. :)
