Best Way to gain confidence in Orienteering is to set few destinations in thick forest and with compass and Map also try to locate reach these locations and return back to the staring point.

Thanks Ruth. I did my first orienteering in very thick forest teeming with wild animals like elephants, bears, Tigers, panthers, Boars and snakes for about 12 kms 30 years back.. It was terrible a feeling initially but once I completed it successfully it really brought confidence in.

Best way to orient yourself you firstly must know Northern and Southern constellations, the side sun rises and falls. These are the most important steps to know where you are and to wher you go.

Must begin by choosing a terrain that´s fairly open. Use a 300 yard space and place flags or mark 3 or 4 spots in a zig zag manner spread through the 300 yards and move on to thicker vegetation as you continue to practice. Use flat groud to begin where possible.

I lost several times, but in day light i followed sun, night i followed stars and the moon. The time is a precious matter. Compass is helpful.Man is more helpful, even i followed winds.

mr. Pedro and Robin Have the best ideas for this. At lest this is what i would do. You can also fallow the stars or the space station. Just make sure you know what to look for
