Do you have to know how to swim to go snorkling?

Bruce Brodnax from Los Angeles, United States Bruce
Depends upon your definition of "swim." I could tread water & swim underwater long before I learned to swim "properly" in college. But for most purposes, yes, absolutely: you're not going to feel comfortable enough to enjoy the activity unless you can swim.

Cairns Great barrier reef. excellent place to go.. just avoid the big busy companies.. smaller dive companies often go to better reef.

Chris Corcoran from Cairns, Australia Chris
in cairns there are a few companies depending on budget and diving experience. budget I would recommend compass, passions of paradise, reef magic. If you have spare money and want to experience over night diving, prodive spirit of freedom, tusa. Most boats offer good diving and good reef. this time of year is busy with whale watching also.

As a beginner just try and relax and control your breathing, and try not to splash around too much! After a bit of practice you will start to feel part of the sea and wil float, be buoyant and navigate more easily and experience all of the nature and marinelife that there is to see. I recommend Coron in the Phillipines for a great choice of snorkelling and dive sites, especially for ship wrecks.

Eric Carlos Laurel from Le Vaud, Switzerland Eric Carlos
The wrecks of Coron Bay, just amazing how nature converts a sad part of human history into beauty beyond words. I just love those wrecks, I agree, Mark. Definitely recommended.
