It's best if you can be away from city lights - the darker the sky, the more you can see. Next, try not to look at bright lights for some time before stargazing, or allow yourself 20-30 minutes for your eyes to get used to the dark. You will see more this way. Next, having a star chart for the night sky is useful to identify stars and constellations. These can be found online for free and if current, can also identify planets or comets that might be visible. Binoculars are the next most useful tool. You would be better with a diameter of 50 mm or better to gather more light at night. As your interest grows, a telescope would be the next thing to look into.
