Ideally you should place the cut end into some growing medium and then see if it shoots roots before transplanting it into soil

Try to visualize what the final effect is going to be. Then make a plan of the different plants and elements you´d like to include (preferably indigenous flora and local materials) and choose plants that will have a similar or homogeneous growth rate. You can clean up before if it helps to visualize, but in the long run you can use some of the natural growth, so don´t over do it!!! draw your design on paper first, then measure the garden to make sure that there is enough space to do the design you want.
